How a solar security camera works
A small photovoltaic panel charges an internal battery during daylight. The camera records to a local microSD card rather than a paid cloud service, and wakes on motion rather than recording continuously — which is what makes the power budget viable. On overcast days the battery carries the load, so panel orientation and battery capacity matter more than peak wattage.
Wi-Fi or 4G — which do you need?
Choose Wi-Fi if the camera will sit within reliable range of your router. It is cheaper to run, because there is no SIM and no data plan.
Choose 4G if it will not. A 4G model uses a mobile SIM instead of your home network, which is what makes it workable on rural blocks, building sites, remote sheds and off-grid properties. Check mobile coverage at the exact spot you intend to mount it before you buy — coverage at the house is not coverage at the back gate.
